CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Let Me Love You

Brianna tossed the bottle of expensive wine in her cart, shocked it didn’t break. The lady to her right raised her brows, but didn’t say anything.

Brianna hated being out among humans, but she was on a mission. She stared at the selection before her, wondering if she should get another bottle. She tossed five more in. Then she raced to the frozen aisle to grab some of that ice cream with everything but the kitchen sink in it for Amanda. Pickles. She needed pickles too. Wasn’t that what pregnant women wanted? And steaks. Amanda had been eating more meat than four males the past few days. A nice Porterhouse, or three, would make her happy.

She continued filling her cart. Looking the picture of serenity and ease. But she was far from calm. Her rage only magnified as last night’s events replayed in her head. Makenna turning into something Brianna couldn’t fathom and taking out a beast without blinking. Sealing a portal on her own, in spectacular fashion. In truth, she was a little afraid of her older sister now. Lastly, the revelations from Sloane’s mage. She couldn’t wrap her mind around it all.

So she’d borrowed Brenton’s truck, assuring him she was fine and he didn’t need to switch his guard duty shift. Then she’d headed to the closest grocery store. It was the only way she could think of to maybe ease some of the pain riding her sisters. She was new to this whole comforting thing.

She collected things she knew Makenna loved, hoping it would make a dent in her agony. But hope was stupid. As was the idea that wine, chocolate, flowers, and those things called Moon Pies would erase the despair that leaked into the pack link from the Alphas.

Brianna shook her head at herself. She pushed her cart to the checkout. Thankfully, it was empty but for the cashier. She began unloading and was tossing the last bucket of ice cream on the belt when every hair on her arms and neck stood at attention.

Sloane. He was near.

She scanned the area, not seeing him. She stared at the chatty cashier, willing her to hurry. The girl snapped her mouth shut. Soon, Brianna was loading her purchases into the bed of the truck, keeping her eyes peeled for the presence that only grew stronger. She’d have to take the long way home and hope she lost him.

She’d wondered if he’d leave her alone once she broke it off. She should’ve known she wouldn’t be that lucky.

Shoving the cart into the corral, she pulled out Brenton’s keys. Seeing the dream catcher hanging from the key ring, she smiled despite her distress. Brenton had told her his mother used to hang them everywhere. She was part Lakota Sioux, and had believed in them with all her heart.

She’d learned so much about him in the last few days. Being around him without claiming him, letting him claim her, was torture. But being apart from him was getting harder.
